College students on an Airbnb trip found themselves in an unsettling situation when dawn disturbances and a persistent photographer turned their stay into a harassment-laden nightmare. The bizarre experience was shared on Reddit by a user indecisivennyl, whose group was part of a program visiting businesses in different cities.
According to Newsweek, everything seemed uneventful on the day the group checked in. That is, until the early hours of the morning. “At 4 a.m., some of us woke up to a loud bang in the backyard,” the original poster wrote.
When the students looked outside to investigate the noise, they discovered a strange scene: several trash bags had been tossed into the yard, and broken glass bottles were scattered across the steps. Shortly after, they noticed a woman walking through the yard, snapping pictures with a digital camera. At first, the group didn’t think too much of it, telling their host about the mess, who then assured them the trash would be cleaned up soon.
It is never just the one weird occurance
As the students stepped outside the next morning, the same woman reappeared and began taking pictures of them. This unsettling pattern repeated the following day. When the guests contacted their host again to ask what was happening, the host finally explained: “Oh, we have a crazy neighbor that does that because she thinks Airbnbs are illegal.”
The Reddit poster even included a photo of a sign the woman had put up outside the property. This sign explicitly warned that the home was an illegal rental and claimed that guests could be photographed, reported to the police, and their cars might get ticketed. The group was immensely relieved that they “leave soon, but we feel like a zoo animal.”
The sign was referencing the District of Columbia’s short-term rental rules. Under D.C. Law 22-307, also known as the Short-Term Rental Regulation Act of 2018, any short-term rental needs to have a valid basic business license with a “Short-Term Rental” endorsement. This legislation really lays out the rules for hosts and booking services operating in the District, covering everything from licensing requirements to operational limits for vacation rentals.
Conflicts between residents and guests of short-term rentals have popped up in a lot of cities as platforms like Airbnb expand into more residential neighborhoods. Some residents genuinely believe that unlicensed rentals mess with communities or try to get around housing regulations. There are fears of damage from unruly guests. Sometimes, renters even try to control what guests will do by issuing strange rules.

Airbnb itself advises guests who run into problems during a stay to report them within 72 hours. Naturally, Reddit users had plenty to say in the comments. One commenter advised, “You should leave a review and add this info. Help keep anyone else from being harassed since the host seems to be fine letting guests deal with the neighbors.”
