The reported FBI investigation into former National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent is nothing more than a politically motivated charade, according to Kent himself. Per Newsweek, he claims the probe is an attempt to distract from the Trump administration’s real reasons for going to war with Iran and is being used to “steal the narrative” away from criticism of the conflict.
Kent, who recently resigned over the Iran war, made these remarks on The Megyn Kelly Show. He was directly addressing reports that the FBI is investigating him for allegedly leaking classified information. The entire situation, from Kent’s position to his public break with the administration and now the probe, raises questions about internal dissent and the credibility of the war’s stated justifications.
Kent’s resignation letter stated that Iran “posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.” He also wrote, “As a Gold Star husband who lost my beloved wife Shannon in a war manufactured by Israel, I cannot support sending the next generation off to fight and die in a war that serves no benefit to the American people nor justifies the cost of American lives.”
Honestly, the administration’s reactions to his resignation boost his credibility
Kent’s late wife, a U.S. Navy senior chief petty officer, was killed in a 2019 ISIS suicide bombing in Syria. He often cites her death as a defining personal loss that shaped his views on U.S. military interventions.
News reports indicate that the FBI probe actually began before Kent announced his resignation. However, Kent said that he was totally unaware of any investigation: “If there truly was an FBI investigation, then there would be a process and procedure for that,” he said. “They would actually formally come to me.”
Kent flat-out denied leaking classified information, calling the timing of the reports suspicious since he’s been so vocal against the Iran war. “I knew this was going to happen. I know their playbook,” he added.
Trump’s administration have raged at Kent, with Trump himself calling Kent “weak on security.” he also said that people who didn’t believe Iran was a threat weren’t ‘savvy’ and he didn’t ‘want’ them. His White House Press Secretary also weighed in, calling Kent’s resignation ‘laughable.’ Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence, stated on X that determining what constitutes an imminent threat ultimately rests with the president.
On the other hand, Marjorie Taylor Greene stood up for Kent, calling him “a GREAT AMERICAN HERO.” Senator Rand Paul also said, “I wish there were more Joe Kents around, and less of the people who seem to be influencing foreign policy.”
Aside from being a former U.S. Army warrant officer, Kent worked at the CIA before becoming the director of the National Counterterrorism Center. There are no details about this FBI investigation, but despite that, Kent has stated his intention to keep speaking out against the Iran war.
