‘Highly intoxicated’ Florida man drives Ford Mustang onto airport runway, tries to steal plane

He says he can't remember doing any of this.

Someone should really do something about Florida man. Barely a day goes by without that guy getting into some insanely dangerous and bizarre incident!

Yesterday, at around 4:30 pm, chaos erupted at Daytona Beach International Airport, and a bright blue Ford Mustang crashed at high speed through a gate at the airport’s international terminal. The muscle car proceeded to speed across an active runway, coming dangerously close to hitting a taxiing Embry-Riddle plane.

The driver, possibly having played a little too much Grand Theft Auto, then emerged from the vehicle and ran towards a nearby plane with running engines, frantically trying the door. It was locked. He approached two more planes and managed to gain entry, before airport operations staff attempted to subdue him.

Incredibly, this wasn’t the end of his caper. A technician dragged the man out of the plane and sat him on a truck tailgate, only for him to leap off and sprint towards yet another plane. He didn’t get far, with security apprehending him.

The drunken idiot was later identified as 58-year-old Bryan Parker of Holly Hill, who remains in custody and is facing multiple charges. Cops confirm Parker was “intoxicated on alcohol and drugs” but, once he’d sobered up, he insisted he had no memory of anything that had just happened.

I did WHAT?!

Many of us will know the feeling of waking up after a heavy night of drinking with no memory (but with an ominous sense that something bad happened). If Parker is being truthful that he really can’t remember any of this, crashing your car into an airport and running amok on the runway really takes the biscuit.

It’s worth underlining that there have actually been incidents of drunken morons stealing planes from airports. In 2005, a 20-year-old man stole a Cessna 172 from a New York airport and took two friends on a 5-hour drunken joyride (joy-fly?). Miraculously, he landed safely, ending up charged with the theft of the plane and DWI.

But there’s no indication that Parker even knew how to fly a plane. This means that, if he had somehow managed to get a plane into the air, this story would have a far more disastrous and tragic ending.

As you might expect, flights were disrupted as the airport ensured the runways were safe, but soon things were back to normal. Parker’s future is somewhat less sunny. He is likely to face multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, a hefty fine, and is all but guaranteed to spend the best part of the next decade behind bars.

If he’s the kind of guy to have a few beers and decide it’s time to try and steal a plane, maybe prison is the best place for him?
