Despite Trump’s ceasefire strikes continue in Lebanon, risking renewed conflict hours after peace deal

With strikes continuing in Lebanon, the ceasefire Donald Trump agreed to could be at risk.

After weeks of boasting about winning in Iran Donald Trump has finally thrown in the towel. The world has been able to breathe a small sigh of relief as news of the President’s peace deal with the country broke this week, even if the deal is allegedly not exactly favorable towards the U.S. That being said, the ceasefire agreement is fragile and with strikes still being conducted in Lebanon could tumble like a deck of cards at a moment’s notice.

Israel has already announced that its operations in Lebanon are set to continue despite Trump’s ceasefire announcement according to an article from The Guardian. Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has claimed that the conflict in Lebanon is separate from the war in Iran and that the two-week pause does not cover the country.

Netanyahu’s statement doesn’t exactly agree with what has been said by Iran and Pakistan, the two countries mediating the conflict. According to Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister of Pakistan, the U.S. and its allies had “agreed to an immediate ceasefire everywhere including Lebanon and elsewhere.” These strikes in Lebanon risk undoing the ceasefire mere hours after it was announced.

Footage supposedly aired on Iranian state TV and shared on platforms like X reported that “the enemy” had conducted strikes on Lebanon during the ceasefire. Some have suggested that the U.S. may have been involved in said strikes but currently there is no proof that is the case.

Trump and Iran’s 10-point peace plan

Iran shared a peace plan with the country claiming it had achieved victory over the U.S., forcing Trump to accept the terms. The president has denied the supposed details of the 10-point plan and accused CNN, who published Iran’s response, of knowingly sharing false information.

However, a condition included in the supposed 10-point plan included an end to war against “all components of the ‘axis of resistance’,” of which the Lebanese group, Hezbollah, is included. Donald Trump made no mention of Lebanon in his announcement regarding the ceasefire but if the strikes continue it could definitely put the ceasefire at risk.

Israel has made it clear that it intends to continue with strikes on Lebanon regardless of the ceasefire in Iran with political and military leaders agreeing that the war should carry on. In fact, it seems the attacks are ramping up in aggression with the Israeli military launching the largest strikes against the country so far according to Reuters.

While Israel supports the U.S. decision to stop the strikes in Iran it’s unclear where Lebanon stands at current. Meanwhile Iran has warned that excluding Lebanon could result in renewed fighting.
