New York woman arrested after her late son’s toxicology report revealed something unexpected

Rebecca A. Jordan, a Saratoga County, New York, mother, is charged in connection with the death of her 10-year-old son. Investigators say toxicology results confirmed the boy died from a lethal overdose of an over-the-counter allergy medication.

Authorities took Jordan, 43, of Halfmoon, New York, into custody on April 15, 2026, and charged her with second-degree manslaughter, tampering with physical evidence, and endangering the welfare of a child, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office and court records cited by local media. Jordan appeared in Malta Town court for her arraignment.

Authorities said the case began on Jan. 19, 2026, when deputies responded to a call reporting an unresponsive child at a residence in Halfmoon, located in Saratoga County. First responders pronounced the boy dead at the scene. At the time, the cause of death was not immediately clear, and investigators launched a monthslong inquiry that included forensic testing and interviews.

Toxicology revealed the truth

The key development in the case came from toxicology results, which investigators say revealed the child had ingested a fatal amount of diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl and other over-the-counter antihistamines. Law enforcement officials determined the level in the child’s system was far beyond any therapeutic or safe dose for a minor and concluded the death was a homicide.

According to investigators, Jordan allegedly administered the medication in an attempt to make the child sleep, a decision prosecutors say ultimately led to fatal complications, including drug intoxication, aspiration, and impaired breathing. Authorities also allege she attempted to conceal evidence by hiding the medication bottle from investigators after the child’s death.

Saratoga County officials say no evidence suggests the child accessed the medication on his own. Instead, investigators believe a caregiver administered the medication. Prosecutors have not publicly outlined any additional motive beyond what they describe as attempts to manage the child’s behavior or sleep issues.

Benadryl’s risks

Recent health advisories from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other public health agencies have repeatedly warned about the risks associated with diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl. Officials caution that taking more than the recommended dose can cause serious side effects, including extreme drowsiness, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, heart rhythm disturbances, and in severe cases, coma or death.

The FDA has also specifically highlighted concerns about misuse among children and teens, including viral “challenges” circulating on social media that encourage intentional overuse of the medication. Health authorities urge parents to store diphenhydramine securely and out of children’s reach.

Jordan remains in custody at the county jail. If convicted of second-degree manslaughter, she could face a state prison sentence, though sentencing would ultimately be determined by a judge based on the outcome of the trial and any plea negotiations. Court records and statements from law enforcement indicate the investigation is ongoing, and additional filings could emerge as the case proceeds through pretrial stages. Jorfan remains in the Saratoga County Jail pending further proceedings, with her next court appearance scheduled for May 5.
