‘You’re mine and she stole you’: California beauty queen slain, cops hunt for homicidally jealous mother-in-law

“She made me angry.”

Mexico City police have officially launched a massive manhunt for a mother-in-law wanted for the cold-blooded, caught-on-video execution of a former beauty queen. Per the NY Post, the disturbing details surrounding the death of 27-year-old Carolina Flores Gomez have sent people reeling. The tragedy unfolded on April 15 inside a home in Polanco, which is known as one of the most exclusive and expensive neighborhoods in Mexico City.

The footage from the scene is truly chilling. It shows the former pageant winner, who held the Miss Teen Universe title for Baja California in 2017, walking through her home toward the back of the house. She was simply going to get a glass of water for her mother-in-law, a woman identified in news reports as Erika Maria “N” or Erika Herrera.

The video shows the mother-in-law following closely behind her before the audio captures six distinct shots being fired. Shortly after the shots rang out, the victim’s husband, Alejandro Gomez, entered the frame while carrying the couple’s baby.

If that wasn’t bad enough, things get super clingy, super fast

The interaction that followed is difficult to process. He confronted his mother, asking what had happened, and her response was hauntingly possessive. According to the footage, she replied, “She made me angry,” before adding, “You’re mine and she stole you.” It is an incomprehensible justification, jealousy, for such a violent act.

Serious questions surround the timeline of this incident. Police have noted that Alejandro Gomez did not report the shooting until the following day. By the time authorities were notified, the suspect had already fled the scene and gone missing.

The victim’s mother, Reyna Gomez Molina, spoke to Univision News and explained that the delay in reporting was driven by her son-in-law’s fear regarding the future of his young child. He was reportedly worried that the baby would end up in a foster home if he immediately involved the authorities.

The tension between the two women had apparently been brewing for quite some time. According to the NY Post, a close friend of the victim revealed that Flores Gomez had been hounded by her mother-in-law ever since she became pregnant.

When the friend asked how things were going with her mother-in-law, Flores Gomez reportedly said, “Ay, she doesn’t like me. I don’t know, she’s never liked me. Since I became pregnant it has gotten worse, she agitates me a lot.”

The impact of this case has been felt far beyond the walls of that Polanco home. The high-profile nature of the crime has rattled the nation, leading to a public demonstration in Baja California over the weekend where people gathered to demand justice for the young mother. The investigation remains active, and the mother-in-law is now the subject of an official arrest warrant.

The home was filled with signs of a young family, including a playpen, a stroller, and various children’s toys. It looks like the happy home she often featured on her TikTok videos. The juxtaposition of these domestic items with the violence that occurred is jarring.

When the husband walked into the room after the shooting, the video captures him asking, “What was that?” and then another voice, presumably his mother’s, asking, “What did you do, crazy?” Her response of “Nothing” followed by her explanation of being angry is something that will likely stay with anyone who follows this case.

As the manhunt continues, the public is left waiting for more answers. The police have identified the mother-in-law as the prime suspect, but the fact that she remains at large adds a layer of urgency to the situation. It’s a tragic end for a woman who had achieved so much at a young age, and the circumstances involving the husband and his initial delay in reporting the crime only add to the complexity of this investigation.

For now, the focus remains on locating the suspect and ensuring that the legal process moves forward in the wake of this senseless loss. The community’s call for justice is loud, and the pressure on authorities to resolve this case is higher than ever.
