Texas mechanic has seen everything. Then he pops Honda hood and finds a melted surprise: ‘That’s a new one’

Um, how does that even happen?

A Texas mechanic who says he has spent 17 years working on vehicles says he was still caught off guard after discovering what appeared to be a melted car battery inside a Honda engine bay, a moment captured in a viral TikTok video.

The post, shared by BrutalSinkHTX (@sk8andrevive), shows the technician popping the hood and reacting to a damaged battery that appears warped and partially deformed. The text overlay reads, “Customer States Battery Melted,” framing the unusual repair request that brought the vehicle into the shop.

In the caption, the mechanic reflected on his long career and the rarity of what he was seeing. He wrote,

Welp….after 17 years of doing this wrenching thing….this is a first… ticket said ‘customer slammed on brakes and car shut off and battery melted’ I’m like wtf… after being initially shocked (no pun intended) I realized what had happened wuz…..”

While inspecting the engine bay on camera, he speculates aloud about what may have caused the damage, saying, “Looks like the old hood latch popped out into the battery,” as he points to the affected area. A verified CarParts account commented on the post with a brief reaction: “That’s a new one.”

Another comment added, “Me at the beginning : ain’t no way the battery melted?? Me immediately after you opened the hood: well I’ll be damned.”

Can car batteries melt?

The clip has sparked widespread curiosity online, with many viewers questioning whether a car battery can truly “melt” as it appears to have done in the video or whether the damage reflects a different type of failure altogether.

In standard automotive systems, most vehicles use lead-acid batteries encased in durable plastic housings. These batteries are not designed to melt under normal conditions, but they can fail in extreme scenarios.

When internal short circuits occur or when a charging system malfunctions, heat can build rapidly inside the battery. That heat can cause the plastic casing to warp, bulge, or appear melted, even though the internal issue is typically chemical and electrical rather than a simple heat liquefaction.

Automotive safety organizations note that heat and electrical stress are among the most common contributors to battery failure. The American Automobile Association (AAA) recommends regular battery inspections, particularly in high-heat environments where accelerated wear and reduced performance can occur more quickly.

In the TikTok video, the mechanic’s reaction reflects the uncertainty of the situation. After years in the trade, he appears to be piecing together what might have happened in real time, suggesting a mechanical interaction inside the engine bay may have contributed to the damage. Still, the unusual sight of a severely deformed battery was enough to stand out in a field where unexpected repairs are routine. As car experts put it, it was simply a first.
