President Donald Trump made a striking statement at a law enforcement event, boasting that Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has “kept me out of jail for years.” The remark quickly drew widespread attention, with many people puzzled by what Trump meant.
According to Mediaite, Trump was indicted in three separate cases, two of them at the federal level. In May 2024, he was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying records to hide hush money payments made to cover up his affair with pornographic actress Stormy Daniels. He was given a sentence of unconditional discharge, meaning no jail time and no fine.
In an interview on Fox News, Blanche said he would like to have the attorney general job permanently, and that Trump had told him to treat his time as acting attorney general as an audition. Trump’s praise for Blanche was therefore not surprising, given the loyalty Blanche has shown since taking over the Department of Justice.
Todd Blanche has reshaped the Justice Department in ways that clearly serve Trump’s interests
Since taking over the Department of Justice, Blanche has moved aggressively to use the department’s resources in ways that appear to serve Trump. This includes firing four career prosecutors and hiring Trump ally Joe diGenova to oversee an investigation into John Brennan, the former CIA director.
Blanche has also sought to vacate the seditious conspiracy convictions against members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, who were found guilty of some of the most serious crimes committed during the January 6 attack on the US Capitol.
He has also filed a criminal inquiry into Jerome Powell, the chair of the Federal Reserve, a move widely criticized as an attempt to intimidate Powell and undermine the independence of the central bank. Trump’s aggressive moves at home have also been mirrored abroad, as his foreign policy threats and erratic deal-making on Truth Social have repeatedly rattled global partners and rivals alike.
The Department of Justice under Blanche has also brought charges against the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). Legal experts have said the charges are weak, and that the indictment ignores the fact that the SPLC shared information with law enforcement under both Republican and Democratic administrations.
Trump’s hardline approach has had ripple effects far beyond domestic politics, with analysts noting that how North Korea is reacting to Trump’s nuclear posture is one of the more alarming consequences of his foreign policy decisions.
“This is yet another kind of salvo in the administration’s attacks on non-profit organizations and trying to quell dissent,” said Vanita Gupta, a civil rights lawyer at New York University. “I do view this as a part of a broader effort to undermine the independence of the Department of Justice and to use the department as a tool to further the president’s own interests.”
Civil rights groups and legal experts have broadly criticized Blanche’s actions as an attempt to intimidate and undermine independent organizations and individuals who have been critical of Trump. Whether Trump’s open support will be enough to keep Blanche in his position long-term remains to be seen.
