Texas mom arrested after fleeing to Florida in aftermath of toddlers on cocaine drowning in backyard pool

Whatever sentence she gets won't compare to the guilt she'll feel for the rest of her life.

Cops have finally tracked down Laura Nicholson, a Texas mom who became a fugitive after her two young daughters were found unresponsive in their backyard pool, and were later found to have cocaine in their systems.

As per the details released by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the horrific incident took place on February 2, 2026, in Katy, Texas. Nicholson, 23, is said to have passed out on her sofa while her two unsupervised daughters, ages 2 and 3, made their way into the backyard through a partially open door.

Laura’s mom, Catherine Nicholson, returned to the house, having left to run an errand earlier that morning. She noticed the open door, noted an ominous silence, and rushed into the backyard. She then discovered her grandchildren floating in the pool and began “screaming”.

The commotion woke up the children’s grandfather, David Nicholson, who had been asleep upstairs. He rushed down, and the grandparents dragged the children from the pool and frantically tried to administer CPR as neighbors called 911.

Autopsies later revealed the kids had cocaine and benzoylecgonine, a cocaine metabolite, in their systems, with their mom having a history of what she describes as “drug allegations”.

On the run from her horrific negligence

In the chaotic aftermath of her children’s deaths, Nicholson fled Katy and disappeared. An investigation was immediately launched, culminating in the Harris County Sheriff’s Office charging her in absentia with two counts of injury to a child (reckless, second-degree felonies) on May 8.

It doesn’t appear there was a manhunt per se, but an anonymous tip saw Nicholson located in Lee County, Florida at a mental health facility. The arrest was carried out by the U.S. Marshals’ Florida/Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force in coordination with Harris County’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team.

She has now been booked into Lee County Jail as a fugitive and will soon be extradited to Harris County, Texas to face the consequences of her alleged parental negligence.

There’s no silver lining or upside to this story: it’s misery from top to bottom. Two innocent kids are dead, with the fact that cocaine was found in their systems suggesting a horrific home life. Their mom is almost certainly going to be behind bars for a very long time, while having to process the grief of having her kids’ blood on her hands.

And the grandparents will spend the rest of their lives wondering if things might have worked out differently if they hadn’t run that errand or taken that nap.
