Despite the fact that they’re set in completely different eras and star a completely different cast of characters, Quentin Tarantino announced recently that both Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained might actually be part of a “trilogy” of films. So to speak.
Speaking to Total Film, the motor-mouthed director had this to say:
“I don’t know, Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained bespeak a trilogy. As different as they are, there is a companion piece quality. There might very well be a third one. I just don’t know what it is yet.”
There’s a good chance that Tarantino meant that the films follow each other thematically, rather than narratively, although it’s a relatively vague comment that could actually turn out to mean something different entirely. Would a third film unite characters from both movies, despite the fact that they’re set nearly half a decade apart?
There was actually talk a while back – before Django Unchained became Tarantino’s official next movie – of having Brad Pitt’s character from Inglourious Basterds back home in the Deep South, giving it to the Klu Klux Klan, perhaps in a prequel. That was also the first time Tarantino spoke of his “southern,” though the project seems to have morphed into Django Unchained along the way.
Having Pitt’s character appear would have linked the movies in a loose trilogy sense, but it’s unlikely such an appearance could be made given that there are too many years between Inglourious and Django. Oh, well.
So far the best link we can manage is Tarantino using this set of movies as a way of kicking it to the world’s most hated organisations: first the Nazis, now the KKK and the slavery scene. Who knows what could be next in the historical vengeance trilogy? That’s right: we’ve given it a name.
