Austin just faced down a chaotic and terrifying 24-hour shooting spree that left four people wounded. After the 10th shooting, the police issued a temporary ‘shelter-in-place order. Now, after having apprehended three teenage suspects, the Texas city can breathe a sigh of relief. All 12 incidents were primarily concentrated in South and East Austin.
According to Police Chief Lisa Davis, the situation started with the theft of a vehicle from an apartment complex and a separate firearm theft from a local business. While officials didn’t immediately connect the two, they soon faced a flood of calls linked to the suspects. The spree saw gunfire directed at residential buildings, vehicles, and even two city fire stations. In one instance, a firetruck was hit while firefighters stood directly behind it.
Per CBS News, the suspects, identified as a 15-year-old boy, a 16-year-old boy, and 17-year-old Cristian Fajardo Mondragon, were apprehended after a pursuit involving the Manor Police Department and the Travis County Sheriff’s Office. Officers tracked a stolen white Kia Optima, which the suspects eventually abandoned in a field before attempting to flee on foot.
I don’t even know how you would go about making sense of this
The violence took a turn for the worse on Sunday, May 17, just before 9:00 AM, when a man walking his dog was struck in the back by gunfire. Throughout the day, the suspects targeted various locations, including a drive-by shooting at 1:44 PM and a critical incident at 2:29 PM, where one victim sustained life-threatening injuries.
Chief Davis noted that investigators relied on surveillance technology to piece the timeline together. “We had two individuals that were going and robbing cars, and then started firing shots at people,” Davis said.
“We had one pole cam that was up that actually captured one of the shootings in front of a store where two people were shot. A woman sitting there, standing there, talking to someone, and they drive by, and they shoot out their window, striking her.”
Mayor Kirk Watson expressed frustration regarding the lack of a clear motive for the violence. “I don’t know what motive would drive anybody to drive around senselessly in this city, in multiple parts of this city, shooting,” he said.
Police believe the attacks were a mix of random and targeted incidents. Some victims seem to have been known to the suspects while others were seemingly random.
By the time the spree ended, the total damage included four people wounded, five vehicles hit by gunfire, four residences struck, and two fire stations damaged. At least five vehicles were stolen throughout the ordeal.
The investigation remains active as authorities review ballistic evidence and surveillance footage to finalize formal charges. These are expected to include multiple counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, theft of a firearm, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
On the internet, however, the incident has already kicked up a conversation around gun laws. After the recent White House Correspondents’ dinner, the acting AG refused to even consider the topic, let alone discuss it. Although after the ICE shootings, Trump has changed some of his statements, angering his gun constituency.
