A 16-year-old girl in Trinidad, Texas, was reportedly hospitalized after a series of showers left her with what her parents describe as severe chemical burns. The family is now seeking answers as they navigate a troubling situation involving the city’s water supply.
According to FOX 4, the situation came to light after the teenager experienced intense skin irritation following a shower on May 28. Her parents, David and Misty Logan, stated that their daughter took additional showers in an attempt to ease the pain, but the water only served to make her condition significantly worse.
Medical records from an appointment at Children’s Health Dallas appear to confirm the family’s fears. They noted that the patient suffered from a “most likely chemical burn/severe dermatitis from water she was exposed to.”
Per FOX 4, the family’s lawyer got the water tested
Per PEOPLE, Misty shared their frustration on Facebook regarding the lack of communication from local officials, writing, “On May 28, 2026, my child was chemically burned from head to toe from Trinidad’s water! We have doctors saying it is from the water! My daughter suffered for days, her whole body was burning for days! As a mom. I felt so helpless not being able to make her better! I’m so angry at the city of Trinidad. They had put chemicals in our water. I was never notified of that being done.”
The Logans have reportedly lived in the area for 20 years and claim that water quality has been a recurring issue during their time in the city. “We’ve always had a problem with this water since we’ve lived here,” Misty explained. “It’s always been discolored, smells.”
David echoed these concerns and emphasized the severity of the situation. “This is not a laughing matter,” he told FOX 4. “I do strongly believe that this, with my daughter, had something to do with the water.” Misty agreed, noting that the medical professionals they consulted reached the same conclusion. “The doctors had come to the conclusion that what she had been exposed to was something from our water,” she said.
Per FOX 4, the city’s Facebook page previously indicated that Trinidad was in the process of changing the disinfectant in its water system, a conversion from chloramine to free chlorine that lasted from April 27 until May 30. It remains unconfirmed if this specific treatment process caused the teen’s injuries, but the family’s attorney provided preliminary water test strip results that reportedly showed dangerous levels of free chlorine in the Logan household’s supply.
The city is reportedly embroiled in multiple legal battles, including a federal lawsuit filed by Jennifer Combs, a resident who was previously charged with a felony after posting on Facebook about the city’s water quality. Trinidad Police Chief Charles Gregory had claimed that her post “creates fear, panic, or unnecessary emergency response within a community,” though a grand jury declined to indict her. Combs alleges her arrest was an act of deliberate political retaliation.
During a May 28 city council meeting, Municipal Judge Shellena Bivens was fired, a move she claims was unjust. Interestingly, not long before that, she had dismissed charges against a protester. Meanwhile, two former city employees have filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the city. One of the plaintiffs, former Water Clerk Colby Reyes, claims she was fired after refusing to lie on behalf of the City Administrator and the Police Chief.
Per FOX 4, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is currently investigating the water quality. KLTV reported that a scheduled water workshop meant to address these concerns was abruptly canceled on June 4.
Addressing the state of the city’s utilities, Misty Logan told FOX 4, “Everyone in the city needs to be able to turn their faucet on and be able to drink the water with no hesitation.” She also did not mince words regarding the city’s handling of the crisis, stating on social media, “My daughter did not deserve this. This city needs to get their s— together and now.”
The family is currently weighing their legal options against the city, but their primary focus is on their daughter’s recovery. “After watching what my daughter went through head to toe, my momma bear is out, I’m done,” Misty said. According to both PEOPLE and FOX 4, the city has yet to provide a comment or definitive answers regarding the chemical levels that may have led to this incident.
Sadly, this isn’t the first city in Texas to struggle with its water. The town of Corpus Christi has warned that their taps are about to run dry.
