A viral clip recorded by a man who intentionally blocked an elderly woman from going up the stairs at a train station in London has caused outrage online. The clip has angered people so much that they have demanded to know the identity of the man involved.
The incident took place at Harrow and Wealdstone station in North London on Wednesday according to The Sun. It shows the camera pointed at the elderly woman as she stands on the stairs pleading with the man recording to move so that she can carry on holding onto the handrail as she moves up the stairs. However, for whatever reason, the man refuses to move leading to a somewhat heated altercation.
The woman can be heard saying to the man, “I want to come up the stairs,” to which he responds telling her not to touch him. She then asks, “can you move please?” He retorts with a warning, “I’m recording you,” to which the woman tells him that’s fine before repeating her request for the man to move.
The man tells her to go around but the woman claims that she can’t and that she needs the handrail as she is 80-years-old. Still the man refuses to move from his position in the middle of the stairs telling the woman “you’ve got legs.” The man claims he’s relaxing at the side of the stairs and the video ends with the woman calling him “rude and arrogant,” before seeking help from a man in a high-vis jacket.
People online are outraged
The clip understandably boiled the blood of netizens who thought the man’s unnecessary antagonism towards the woman was out of line. “Whoever this t—er is f–k you – try that on me and your “cool social media video” will turn into an endoscopy,” wrote one person on X. “This person is a disgusting t–t, and the internet needs to make him famous to set an example for the rest of them.” added another.
Elderly people are generally considered to be more vulnerable than most. Many expressed sympathy for the woman who likely felt somewhat helpless in the situation given her age. “Looks like she needed the hand rail to help her. Totally unnecessary aggravation just for social media!” someone explained. There was plenty of criticism directed towards the people walking by without helping too.
It seems many believe that the video was made simply to garner attention to the man’s content, some people will do anything for a little bit of internet fame it seems. Transport for London’s lead on Customer Insight Mark Evers called the behavior “extremely disappointing and completely unacceptable,” as per The Sun.
He adds that this is not a typical interaction on public transport in the capital stating, “We expect customers travelling on our network to treat each other with respect at all times.”
