Washington DC briefly held the title for the worst air quality of any major city in the world this past Sunday. It was all courtesy of a massive, 40-minute fireworks display that pushed local pollution levels into dangerous territory. According to CNN, the extreme heatwave resulted in triple-digit temperatures on Saturday. This, combined with a staggering amount of pyrotechnics, made the atmosphere particularly volatile.
The fireworks were organized by Freedom 250, a nonprofit backed by President Donald Trump that was tasked with managing a series of semiquincentennial events. The display was designed to be a record-breaking spectacle, launching hundreds of thousands of shells from 10 different sites, including the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, the Potomac River, and West Potomac Park.
CNN noted that the show was designed to set the Guinness World Record. A typical 4th of July show in the capital usually features around 17,000 shells. However, this year’s event planned to detonate more than 850,000. Since the record is the goal, it has to beat the current record set in the Philippines in 2016, which involved 810,904 fireworks.
Things were already rough before the display
As noted by the Washington Post, it was yet to be determined as of Sunday evening whether the display successfully broke that record. A spokesperson for Freedom 250 stated that the organization would “be submitting to Guinness World Records for verification.” Additionally, Guinness hasn’t commented on the attempt.
It should be noted that the environmental impact was clear well before the first shell was fired. Dr. Kisha Davis, the chief health officer of Montgomery County, Maryland, offered a blunt assessment to CNN. “The air quality today is like running a marathon while smoking a cigarette,” she remarked, noting that the sheer volume of fireworks would only exacerbate the already difficult conditions.
In the immediate aftermath of the fireworks, city officials issued a Code Red Air Quality Alert. They reportedly advised residents to stay indoors and warned that the air was “unhealthy for seniors, kids, people with medical conditions” and could cause issues for the general public.
CNN noted that the Washington Post had obtained Internal documents from the National Park Service. They noted that these documents had previously predicted that the show would cause “very unhealthy” conditions across central DC. The documents went as far as to suggest that spectators should wear N95 masks if they planned to watch the show outdoors.
The National Park Service did not provide a comment to CNN regarding these internal papers, the impact was visible. By 5:30 PM ET on Sunday, the city had dropped to No. 26 on the global air quality ranking platform, IQAir.
The weather impacted the celebrations all weekend
According to the BBC, extreme weather caused significant disruptions nationwide, impacting the the country’s 250th birthday celebrations. In DC, thunderstorms forced an evacuation of the National Mall earlier on Saturday, and temperatures reached 100F. They noted that the weekend was further marred by power outages affecting 750,000 properties across several states due to the severe weather. Medical services were reportedly busy throughout the event as well.
The National Special Security Event Joint Information Center reported that the DC Fire and EMS Department handled 96 patient contacts and 40 transports from the National Mall between midnight Friday and 9 AM Sunday. Additionally, George Washington University reported 289 patient contacts by 10 PM Saturday, and the Department of Health and Human Services recorded 314 contacts. It remains unclear how many of these cases were directly caused by the weather.
The weather will also be helpful. Dr. Davis noted on Sunday that the rain might eventually help reduce the air pollution from the fireworks. “It does push all of those, you know, chemicals and pollutants into the water system, but they are at least out of the air,” she told CNN.
A celebration loved by the President
The festivities included a late-night address from President Donald Trump, who spoke to a crowd on the National Mall. During his speech, he told attendees, “The American dream is back.”
Following the fireworks, CNN reported that he praised the display on social media. He called it “the Most Spectacular Fireworks Show I have ever seen, and I’ve seen them all. Congratulations on a job well done!” He also concluded his remarks by calling the moment “only the dawn of the golden age of America” with its destiny “written by God.”
The weekend also celebrated freedom by allowing people to practice their First Amendment rights. Hundreds of members of a far right group peacefully marching through Washington DC on the 4th of July. Unfortunately, some people did miss the celebrations. On TikTok, a Missouri woman was locked in a Planet Fitness when she tried to get a work out in before the festivities.
