New York woman grabs berries on sale at Wegmans. They ring up at 225% more than the listed price, and the cashier tells her it’s her fault: ‘I am struggling today’

The cashier blamed her for buying "organic".

A woman shared her frustrating grocery shopping experience at a Wegmans store in what appeared to be New York, after berries she believed were on sale rang up significantly higher than the advertised price. The TikTok user, who goes by @lifeaccordingtokp and has around 24,400 followers, posted the video recounting the incident, which she said came after an already difficult trip to Walmart earlier that day.

According to the Facebook profile link given on her bio, her real name appears to be Kat. Kat says Wegmans had a sale on non-organic berries near the store entrance. She said raspberries were listed at $3.99 for a double pack, and blackberries at $4.99 for a double pack. Based on those prices, she said she picked up several packs of berries along with other groceries and headed to the register.

When her items were scanned, the berries rang up far higher than she expected, at prices of $12.99, $7.99, and $13, according to her account. She said she asked the cashier whether the discount would apply at the end of the transaction, to which he allegedly said no. When she told him the prices seemed too high, she claimed he responded: “Well, it’s your fault. You didn’t get non-organic.”

The berry display mixed organic and non-organic products together, making it hard to tell the difference at a glance

According to Kat, the sale applied only to non-organic berries, but the way the display was arranged made it difficult to tell the two apart. She said the non-organic berries on sale had yellow labels, while the organic ones, priced higher, had green labels. She said she had not noticed the difference and had unknowingly picked up the organic varieties.

Kat said she did not have her glasses with her at the time, as they were in her car, which made reading the smaller label details even harder. In her video, she said, “I don’t have my glasses on, I can’t see.” She also noted that the berries appeared to be the same brand and looked nearly identical, saying they were “same company, same brand, same everything.”

After the cashier called over a manager, the woman said she walked back to the display to look more closely. Kat said the manager acknowledged the setup was confusing, telling her, “oh yeah, I know, that would make more sense,” after she suggested the store separate the organic and non-organic products more clearly.

She said, “Just put the organic in the case and leave all the sales stuff out.” Similar checkout confusion can happen at other retailers, like when a Goodwill grab bag caused a scanning problem.

Kat said the cashier was initially dismissive, and she felt he implied she was at fault for not reading the labels. She recounted feeling overwhelmed during the exchange, saying she told him, “I’m so sorry. I need to re-regulate because I’m coming off of a very difficult situation at Walmart.” She described the cashier as looking at her “like I’m nuts.” This kind of dismissive employee attitude is also seen when a server told her she had enough food.

She ultimately exchanged the organic berries for the non-organic ones and completed her purchase. In the video, she said the person who stocked the shelf “clearly wasn’t thinking” about how the arrangement might confuse shoppers.

Kat added that she wished she could have gone live during the incident to share the moment with her followers, saying, “I so badly wanted to like go live so I could like call you guys and be like, look at this dumb s**t.” She said she held back because she understood that other shoppers in the store would not want to be recorded.

Throughout the video, Kat was visibly emotional, saying, “I am just struggle bussing today,” and, “I am struggling today.” She also mentioned that she had previously found a fly in a salad from the same Wegmans location, but had continued shopping there because she said she generally likes the store. She said, “I know I just had a fly in my salad from you guys and I’m back, so I can put up with a lot, but I need y’all to get it together.”

The video drew sympathy from many viewers in the comments. “You know what? I’m really proud of you!! It’s all so hard out there and we’re all really trying. And despite all the BS you’d been handled – you stood up and said ‘not ok’. Thank you! You made it easier for everyone who came in after you and didn’t have to be confused or struggle. I appreciate you,” one commenter wrote.

Another viewer commented, “Everyday life should not be this complicated. I’m so sorry that you had such a day. Life is too short to have to put up with stuff like that.” A third commenter added, “I just want to hug you. Girl we get it – we are ALL tired. I’m proud of you for 1. Holding it together better than I would have. 2. Speaking up and not just letting this slide.”

Wegmans has not publicly responded to the incident, and it is not clear whether the store has made any changes to the berry display following the woman’s complaint.
