Police say a Texas funeral home operator wrote herself into a dead man’s will — and walked away with nearly $2.2 million

Unique Green, 47, was arrested on Tuesday, July 21, in Houston, Texas, after authorities allegedly found evidence linking the suspect to four counts of forgery and theft of more than $300,000. However, the method Green allegedly used was what captured the attention of various outlets across the nation.

Green is facing allegations that the suspect forged a will while also claiming to be the wife of Lawrence Gammon, 78, who died in 2025. At the time of the arrest, Green was working as a funeral home operator, and authorities believe the suspect was plotting to steal Gammon’s $2.2 million estate.

According to People, Green is being held at Harris County Jail as of July 22 under the name Michael James Green. There has been no information confirming Greer’s gender indentity.

Green changed the rightful heir to Gammon’s estate

While working as an unlicensed attendant at a funeral home on Wheeler Avenue in Houston, Green is understood to have obtained personal information provided by Gammon’s family after his death in June 2025. Within a matter of weeks, Green had allegedly submitted a will claiming to be Gammon’s wife and the rightful heir to his multimillion-dollar estate.

After submitting the documents, Green is alleged to have stolen $2.2 million from bank accounts belonging to Gammon, along with three cars from his home on Tottenham Drive.

Green allegedly even went through the trouble of opening an additional account in the name of the “Estate of Lawrence E. Gammon” using falsified documents, including a fake death certificate. Investigators later found that even the business phone number and email Green operated were impersonations of another funeral home in Houston.

Authorities believe Green used those details to lure unsuspecting bereaved families before allegedly fleecing them while they were still trying to regain their footing after losing loved ones.

Recently, there has been a slew of financial scams that are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Sure, there are still people allegedly running romance scams from Nigeria. But authorities have also uncovered cases of scammers sending unsuspecting victims pop-up links that appear to come from Microsoft before convincing them to “safekeep” their money in accounts ultimately controlled by the scammers.

Green is accused of transporting bodies in a U-Haul

Reportedly, Green has been carrying out similar impersonation schemes for a long time. Several families are believed to still be waiting to see the remains of their loved ones after contracting Green two years ago. The suspect has also been accused of transporting bodies in a U-Haul.

It is unclear why it took this long for the alleged conduct to result in these charges, but Green has an extensive history with law enforcement involving unrelated cases.

Since 1998, Green has been arrested on multiple occasions on suspicion of forgery, assault, theft, and fraud. The suspect has also been implicated in forging signatures on affidavits, giving false testimony, and committing other alleged crimes.

A Harris County District Court judge set Green’s bond at $800,000 as the suspect awaits trial.
