Content creator Samantha recently highlighted how trust between restaurant owners and their staff can be broken by a tip of a bucket. Samantha, who shares stories about her life on Instagram and TikTok, recounted a situation from a past job that ultimately led to her resignation. The video, which has gained significant traction with over 450K views across both platforms, details how a mandatory tip-matching scheme turned into a sour experience for the entire team.
According to Samantha, the ordeal began with a message. “We get a group message that says, ‘mandatory emergency meeting tonight.’ You have to be there.” When the staff met, the owner allegedly puts a bucket on the table and says, “We had the most brilliant idea for this year’s office party. From now until the end of the year, you guys will put all of your tips in here and whatever is in here, my wife and I are gonna match and we’re gonna take you guys all on vacation”’
Samantha refused for a good reason. She said, “I raised my hands. ‘Hi, I’m a single mother of three. This is my income. On top of that, Christmas is right around the corner.’ It was like October 1st. ‘I would really like to keep my money so that I can provide for my family.” Despite her concerns, the owners allegedly insisted, “This is mandatory. This is your work family. You also have to provide for your work family. Don’t you want to go on vacation with them?’
Then came the holiday season
“Maybe December 19th or 20th, we get ‘emergency mandatory meeting tonight.’ Another one of those. We go in, and we’re like, hey, what’s going on?” Then Samantha alleged, “They’re like, ‘guys, we have terrible news. There was not as much money in the tip bucket as we thought there was gonna be. So even with us matching it, we can’t bring all of you guys on vacation.’” So Samantha said she asked a follow-up question.
She recounted, “[I] raise my hand. ‘Are you going to divvy that money up amongst everybody who put money into there?’” According to her, the owner said, “They’re like, ‘Oh no, no, no, no, no. Those funds were already allocated to a vacation. So my wife and I are still going to go on that.’” At this point in the video, she laughs and then stares at the camera. Now, it should be noted that this is only her version of events and cannot be verified.
She claimed that after the owners left, the staff took matters into their own hands. Samantha said she took the bucket and “set it in front of everybody. I said, ‘just split this into thirds. Take it. You guys can go on your own little vacation, have a bulk of money, a little lump sum to buy Christmas gifts.’”
The other staff asked about her share, but she admitted to them that she barely put any money in because of her situation. She claimed that they still gave her a share. Recently, Samantha also shared that a couple once accused her of stealing from them after giving her a birthday tip.
Then Samantha alleged, “There was $6,000 fucking dollars in this bucket. That would have been $12,000. I think that’s plenty to bring somebody somewhere for a weekend.” The aftermath was swift. She claimed that the team all wrote “our resignation letter on a piece of the receipt paper, like a f**k you type deal. So that when they came back from their vacation, their bar was closed the entire time.”
According to Altametrics, under the Fair Labor Standards Act, tips are the property of the employee who earns them. Owners and managers are legally prohibited from taking a portion of these tips for themselves.
As one user on Instagram noted, “This is why I tip in cash. Owners cannot be trusted.” In one heartwarming story, a customer realized she messed up her tip and went back the next day to fix her mistake. Another user commented, “Illegal for them to touch your tips.”
Altametrics notes that failing to comply with these laws can lead to serious consequences, including fines and back pay claims. As one TikTok user commented, “I would be calling the labor department as soon as I got home.” Another added, “That was shady from the start. I would have quit on the spot when they mentioned it.”
The sentiment across social media was largely supportive of the staff’s decision to walk away. One Instagram user remarked, “6 thousand dollars is enough for 4 people to do a pretty cool vacation.” Another stated, “I believe that’s called wage theft.”
