‘Her husband was checking you out’: Woman minding her own business is shamed by another woman unhappy with what she’s wearing

A TikTok showing a woman being approached by another woman and being chastised for her choice in clothing has gone viral. The video in question sparked a conversation regarding people’s right to wear what they want as well as people’s right to speak about the way others present themselves.

The clip, which was posted to TikTok by Zylan, has already been watched by almost 7 million people, with most taking Zylan’s side in the situation. The video shows Zylan and her friend minding their own business, stroking a cat at their table, before a woman approaches them and begins to berate Zylan over her choice of clothing.

While the sound in the viral clip is a little difficult to hear on account of the sound played over the top of it, the woman can be heard telling Zylan, “You deserve for people to see you for your being and not your shorts.” When Zylan responds to the woman’s comments, the stranger tells her, “I’m just being honest.”

The awkward exchange between the two continues as Zylan tries explaining that she had been in the pool, but the woman simply tells her, “Welcome only the attention you want.”

People on TikTok share their thoughts

Aside from a few comments complaining about how hard it was to hear what the woman was saying, almost all of them condemned the stranger’s comments. “Why are some older women so weird towards younger ladies[?]” asked one commenter. “The way she approached you ‘baby girl’ as if you aren’t a fully grown woman?” Another commenter observed.

Others speculated the reason behind the stranger deciding to approach Zylan, “Her husband was checking you out,” suggested one viewer. Another agreed that maybe the woman was feeling insecure about her own husband: “So her husband looked. Got it.” A few more commended Zylan for standing up for herself, “her system rebooted when you said stfu LMAO.”

Some asked Zylan exactly what she was wearing to elicit such a reaction from the other woman, and it seems some viewers were able to find a video showing the outfit in full. Upon seeing the outfit, most were encouraging towards Zylan: “As a woman in her 40’s, this is adorable and whimsical. Wear it.”

Others simply couldn’t work out what problem the woman had with the outfit: “There’s absolutely nothing inappropriate about this outfit at all. You look amazing and are wearing a very appropriate outfit for the beach/pool.”

It seems the people of TikTok have spoken, and most agreed that the stranger was in the wrong for commenting on Zylan’s clothes. Most rallied around her and encouraged her to continue expressing herself and wearing what she wants in the future.
