Iowa woman notices what looks like a claw in a frozen meat package at Hy-Vee: ‘Be careful in America’

The item was labeled "Unknown New Scale Item."

An Iowa woman shopping at a Hy-Vee grocery questioned what she was looking at after noticing what appeared to be a scaled animal with a claw inside a package of frozen meat. TikTok creator Tyleah Trotter (@tyleahtrotter940) shared a video showing the package and its label. The tag identifies the item as “Unknown New Scale Item.”

The item visible inside the package includes a piece that she described as resembling a claw and scaly skin, leaving her unsure what she had found. In audio accompanying the TikTok, Trotter repeatedly described the meat as “unknown” and questioned what she was seeing. She then said she had a lot of it and urged viewers to “be careful in America,” before she put the package back.

One commenter offered a possible explanation, writing, “You in Louisiana or Florida? Because that looks like gator feet.” Several other commenters agreed. That suggestion is notable because Hy-Vee does sell alligator products.

Alligator gets eaten in certain parts of the country. Not so much in Iowa.

Perhaps explaining the mystery, the grocery chain’s website currently has a dedicated “Frozen Alligator” section in its online grocery system. This confirms that Hy-Vee carries frozen alligator products.

This, however, does not establish that the Iowa store shown in Trotter’s video stocked the item or that the package in the TikTok contains an alligator, although what she shows in the video does resemble the animal. It also does not explain why the Hy-Vee location called the product “unknown.”

Other commenters noted, “they serving godzilla.” Another alarmed comment added, “report the store. this isnt usda regulated.”

Alligator meat is legal to eat in the United States and has long been associated with Southern cuisine, particularly in Louisiana and Florida. Louisiana remains the center of the U.S. alligator industry. Florida also has a significant alligator industry and promotes the meat as a commercial food product.

Alligators are much more common in that part of the country, with alligator attacks frequently reported. In June 2026, Louisiana law enforcement reported that an alligator attacked a man while he ran from the cops.

Eating alligator is much less common in Iowa, where it is not a traditional regional food. However, that does not mean Iowans cannot buy it. Alligator meat can enter interstate commerce from states where it is legally processed and sold.

As the commenter noted, alligator is considered a non-amenable species, meaning it does not fall under mandatory federal meat inspection through the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service in the same way as beef, pork, or poultry. Louisiana’s agriculture department specifically lists alligator among species that do not require federal meat inspection.

States instead can impose their own requirements. Louisiana requires alligator meat processed there for human consumption to come from a licensed facility, while Florida regulates alligator processing and sales through state wildlife and agriculture rules.
