Passenger steps onto her cruise balcony after dark. Then she realizes the ship is entering the Bermuda Triangle: ‘surrounded by nothing but’

A cruise passenger posted a nighttime TikTok video from her ship balcony after she said the dark ocean no longer felt relaxing. Victoria, who posts as @victorias.way, appeared in yellow and purple striped pajamas as she opened the balcony door.

An ominous sea shanty played in the video. On-screen text reads, “Cruises are fun until you realize…” She stepped outside and looked at the water lit only by the ship. She held up her phone, which displayed a map app. On-screen text stated, “How dark the ocean is… And you’re sailing through the Bermuda Triangle.” 

She zoomed in on the map. Later text read, “You’re miles away from land, surrounded by nothing but ocean…” She clasped her hands and looked out again. In her caption, she wrote, “I thought cruises were relaxing… until I realized how scary the ocean can actually be.” She asked whether viewers would still cruise through the Bermuda Triangle.

Storms, shallow reefs and a drifting compass cited in place of vanished fleets

In the video, Victoria turned from the railing and then looked back at the water. On-screen text added that ships and planes have “mysteriously disappeared” there and that “nobody really knows exactly why.” The video cut to rougher water below the ship.

On-screen text then said the ship “gets caught in a storm.” Victoria looked over the railing with an uneasy expression. She turned, closed the balcony door, and the final text said a relaxing cruise “doesn’t feel so relaxing anymore” and that “there’s nowhere to go but forward.” 

The National Ocean Service describes the Bermuda Triangle as a region in the western North Atlantic Ocean where ships, planes, and people are alleged to have vanished. The agency said the area has long drawn stories of unexplained disappearances. Cruise passengers often face unexpected situations, as when a woman boards a Viking cruise and immediately notices the vibe is nothing like she expected. 

Some people speculate about extraterrestrials, the lost continent of Atlantis, or vortices into other dimensions, the portal stated. Other suggested ideas include methane gas from ocean sediments and disruptions in geomagnetic lines.

The National Ocean Service said environmental factors could explain many of the reported losses. It noted that many Atlantic tropical storms and hurricanes pass through the area. Before better forecasts, those storms claimed many ships, the agency said. The Gulf Stream can cause rapid and sometimes violent weather changes.

Many Caribbean islands also create shallow waters that can be dangerous for ships. The agency added that there is some evidence that a compass in the area can sometimes point to true north instead of magnetic north. Unexpected discoveries can happen on cruises, such as when a Georgia woman noticed something on her Royal Caribbean room service lid that changed her experience. 

The U.S. Navy and Coast Guard reject supernatural explanations for disasters at sea. Those agencies say nature and human error explain the incidents. No official maps mark the Triangle’s boundaries, and the U.S. Board of Geographic Names does not recognize the name.

The National Ocean Service said disappearances do not appear more common there than in other busy parts of the ocean. The ocean can be deadly in bad weather or with poor navigation anywhere in the world, the agency stated. 

Viewers reacted to Victoria’s video in the comments. One person warned against looking at the sea at night and wrote, “don’t look at the sea during night it’s dangerous.” Another commenter focused on the size of the water and wrote, “and realise the ocean 3x bigger than the earth.”

A third person suggested staying off such trips can have an upside and wrote, “To be poor sometimes it’s a blessing.” One viewer described a sudden thought while watching and wrote, “My intrusive thoughts telling me to jump.”

Another commenter offered a navigation theory and wrote, “It’s because it changes the compass direction into the wrong way. So if they want to go in land let’s say north it leads them south making them think they are coming back but really they are going further out and then it wastes fuel and the plane or ship goes down.”

A different commenter rejected the disappearance stories and wrote, “Guys ships and planes don’t actually disappear in the Bermuda triangle since the Bermuda triangle is filled with electric eels that mess with the tracker.”
