Middle schoolers seen swarming man outside Florida McDonald’s — but police say the video doesn’t show how the fight started

A shocking video capturing a group of middle school students crowding and striking a man outside a McDonald’s in Dania Beach, Florida, has sparked growing public scrutiny and a law enforcement investigation.

While the footage circulating on social media shows a chaotic scene involving a heavily outnumbered adult, investigators are working to piece together what happened moments before the camera started rolling.

Law enforcement officials have revealed that the fight outside was preceded by a tense verbal exchange inside the fast-food restaurant, raising questions about what actually led to the brawl.

Police say the confrontation started inside the restaurant

According to Guessing Headlights, the incident took place on Aug. 21 outside the McDonald’s at 1310 S. Federal Highway, which is reportedly a popular spot for local youth. The restaurant is also located near Olsen Middle School.

The video, recorded by a parent waiting to pick up her children, shows the moment a group of students surrounded the unidentified man. Multiple children can be seen throwing punches and overwhelming the man as he tries to retreat.

The number of students involved quickly pushed the fight toward the main road, with the group eventually moving into the path of oncoming traffic. The situation only came to an end after several adults stepped in to separate the students from the man.

While the video makes the confrontation appear one-sided, the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) has provided some important context about how the fight began.

The BSO said the physical confrontation was the second part of the altercation. According to investigators, the adult man allegedly approached the students while they were still inside McDonald’s and threatened to fight them.

The man then left the restaurant. Rather than staying inside, the students followed him into the parking lot, where the verbal dispute turned physical and became the fight captured on camera.

The added context has left witnesses and community members divided over who should be held responsible. Yanelle Perez, the parent who recorded the video, said her immediate reaction was one of horror at seeing the man surrounded by so many students.

Perez said she only witnessed what happened outside and initially viewed the man as a victim who was completely defenseless against the group. “They basically jumped an old man,” Perez said, estimating that around 10 to 15 teenagers were actively involved in the fight.

Principal Janet Giancarli of Olsen Middle School reportedly reassured parents that the altercation happened entirely off school property. The school also confirmed that no one was injured during the fight.

The police are continuing with their investigation

Despite the statements from the school and witnesses, the BSO said its investigation is still ongoing. As of Sept. 3, detectives were still searching for the man so they could obtain his statement and get a clearer picture of exactly what he said inside the McDonald’s before the fight began.

The BSO continues to review security footage from inside the restaurant and analyze cellphone videos to determine whether the middle schoolers will face criminal charges for assault or whether the adult could face charges for allegedly inciting violence against minors.
