While doing the press rounds for Skyfall, the upcoming James Bond film, director Sam Mendes told the Huffington Post that at one point, he had planned for a Sean Connery cameo. Seems like a cool idea, right? Well according to Mendes, it would have been too problematic.

Check out what he had to say below.

“There was a definite discussion about that — way, way early on. But I think that’s problematic. Because, to me, it becomes too … it would take you out of the movie,” Mendes shared. “Connery is Bond and he’s not going to come back as another character. It’s like, he’s been there. So, it was a very brief flirtation with that thought, but it was never going to happen, because I thought it would distract.”

While the idea seems like something that would be appreciated by Bond fans, I do agree with Mendes. Yes, it would have been awesome to see Connery on screen but really, it wouldn’t make much sense and I think it would most definitely take audiences out of the movie, as Mendes says.

Plus, Connery has made his distaste for the franchise very public and has tried to distance himself from the character, so there’s no telling if they could have even convinced him to do it. And even if they had, I really don’t think it would have fit into the tone and theme of the film. It would have felt too out of place.

While there may be no Sean Connery cameo to look out for, Skyfall is still sure to please just about every James Bond fan when it hits theatres on November 9th.

What do you think? Would a Connery cameo have been appropriate?
