After the recent strong hint that there was a Final Fantasy XIII-2 on the horizon, it has now been confirmed by Square Enix at its 1st Production Department Premier in Tokyo. As well as confirming its existence and showing off a short trailer, Square Enix later gave a few details on the sequel.

“Final Fantasy XIII-2 is currently in production with an aim for producing high quality game content which exceeds Final Fantasy XIII in every aspect; namely, a brand-new story which stems from the previous title as well as a battle system which has evolved further since XIII – and more, we will be disclosing further details about the new game in the future.”

The future isn’t far off for fans though as Square Enix will be posting the trailer that was shown at today’s event on the games official site on the 20th of January.

FFXIII-2 is due to release in Japan this year on both PS3 and Xbox 360 with North America and Europe seeing a release in the winter of 2012.
