Colin Trevorrow Talks Star Wars: Episode VII, Guillermo del Toro Says No

Another day and another piece of Star Wars: Episode VII news. As usual, it comes in the form of the “who will direct the film?” question and this time, we have info on two of the directors that have been thrown into the mix: Colin Trevorrow and Guillermo del Toro.

So, where to begin? Well, we already knew that Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, Zack Snyder would not be helming the film and then we heard that J.J. Abrams was standing back too. Now we have one more name to add to the list of directors who won’t be taking on Star Wars.

Speaking with Fanhattan Blog, del Toro says that he hasn’t been approached to direct the film and he has too much on his plate right now to even take on such a large project. At this time, according to him, it’s just not a possibility.

“You know, I saw it on the Internet, but I haven’t approached them, they haven’t formally approached me. I mean, I heard some rumblings, but to me it’s really — I have so many projects to discuss or think about. [For] something that is not a possibility yet, I don’t do that. You know, because I have so many things that I need to catch up with. If this becomes ever a reality, and there’s an approach to do it, I would then think about it, but — it’s like thinking if I want to date a supermodel. I don’t think about these things.”

Next up is Colin Trevorrow, who is rumored to be in contention to helm the film. According to Filmmixern.se, who asked the director about the rumors, Trevorrow wouldn’t comment directly on the issue but did say that he’s very excited about the film.

“I have very little to say about it,” says Trevorrow. “Certainly, no specifics about what’s going on behind the scenes in the selection of that person [a director]. I think that I can speak as a Star Wars fan, which is important to me. Whoever does do this movie, I think, just needs to have a fundamental understanding of why it’s important to us. We come from a generation who grew up with this as children, to us it’s almost a belief system. It’s harder for people who are older or who were already teenagers when the movie came out to understand how deeply it is our mythology. And there are a bunch of incredible directors who are up for this job… I think whoever gets it will have that fundamental understanding of why Star Wars matters so much to a billion people. It’s just incredible. So that’s all I can say about that. I’m equally excited about it. … that’s all you’re gonna get!”

The del Toro stuff comes as no surprise, the man is very busy and trying to squeeze a project like Star Wars: Episode VII onto his plate just isn’t happening. Would I like to see him helm the film? Ya, I think that could work out well but at this time, he has too many other films to focus on. As for Trevorrow, I’m really not too familiar with his work and honestly, I don’t think Disney would go with him anyways. He may be talented but the mouse house needs a big name behind this one, not an unknown.

What do you think though? Who do you want to see direct Star Wars: Episode VII?
