Following the first trailer released back in June, Blue Sky Studios has released a second trailer for their upcoming animated film Epic, scheduled for release on May 24 of next year.

Directed by Chris Wedge, who was behind previous animated hits Ice Age and Rio, the movie is being promoted on the back of Dreamworks’ Rise of the Guardians; the two share a similar fantasy-adventure scope as well as a common source, both being based upon William Joyce novels.

Here’s the official synopsis for Epic:

Epic is a 3D CG action-adventure comedy that reveals a hidden world unlike any other. From the creators of Ice Age and Rio, Epic tells the story of an ongoing battle deep in the forest between the forces of good who keep the natural world alive and the forces of evil who wish to destroy it. When a teen age girl finds herself magically transported into this secret universe, she must band together with a rag-tag team of fun and whimsical characters in order to save their world… and ours.

As with most animated features these days, the voice talent on this film is impressive, featuring the leading work of Amanda Seyfried and Josh Hutcherson, as well as the likes of Christoph Waltz, Aziz Ansari, Beyonce, Colin Farrell and more. Seyfried’s voice alone is probably enough to make guys like me crash their ships into rocky shores, but when you factor in that supporting cast, I start to see a lot of potential for the film.

While the title is slightly off-putting given the vast overuse of the word ‘epic,’ the trailer promises a real visual feast and potentially cool concept, aided by some solid Snow Patrol music. Some are calling it Ferngully meets Honey I Shrunk the Kids. Throw in a strong teen girl lead and Blue Sky could have quite the profitable stew on their hands.
