Citing anonymous sources, The Verge is reporting that Microsoft is developing a set-top box called Xbox TV, that will give users a “low-cost alternative” device that grants access the company’s “core entertainment services”.

According to the report, Xbox TV will be officially announced sometime next year and will launch before the all-important 2013 holiday shopping season. The device is said to be part of the company’s “two-SKU” next generation Xbox strategy, and is being aimed at consumers who don’t necessarily want or need all the features of a full-fledged video game console.

The sources claim that Xbox TV will run on Windows 8 and use an “always-on” chipset that will allow users to quickly boot-up and resume programs. Additionally, the hardware will support “casual gaming titles” but not full retail games.

Microsoft was asked to comment on the report, and a spokesperson provided the following statement:

“Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend the console lifecycle by introducing controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention.”

Obvisouly Microsoft’s response is not a confirmation of Xbox TV, however, it is interesting that they didn’t provide the standard “We don’t comment on rumors and speculation” answer.
