Check Out The Synopsis For Star Trek Into Darkness

Despite the ridiculous amount of lens flare that took up around 80% of J.J. Abrams's Star Trek movie, what we got was an assured, interesting and exciting entry to the series, albeit one that didn't exactly feel like Star Trek. And though we knew that Abrams would be returning for another round (a privilege that Lost wasn't graced with, given that Abrams went off to create an apparently endless cycle of new shows), we haven't heard a word as to what kind of avenue his Star Trek sequel, currently titled Star Trek Into Darkness, would be taking. Until now.

Despite that ridiculous amount of lens flare that took up approximately 80% of J.J. Abrams’s Star Trek movie, what we got was an assured, interesting and exciting entry to the series, albeit one that didn’t exactly feel like Star Trek. And though we knew that Abrams would be returning for another round (a privilege that Lost wasn’t graced with, given that Abrams went off to create an apparently endless cycle of new shows), we haven’t heard a word as to what kind of avenue his Star Trek sequel, currently titled Star Trek Into Darkness, would be taking. Until now.

Here’s the first plot synopsis, courtesy of Paramount Pictures:

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

It appears, then, that this movie is going into classic “second movie dark syndrome”, which has become a kind of staple for movie trilogies over the years. What does this plot sound like to Star Trek fans? I’m picturing explosions. Do Star Trek fans like explosions?

Star Trek Into Darkness will be out May 17th 2013 and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller.
