The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Will Get IMAX Treatment

Now that we can't possibly bear to watch movies that haven't been manipulated in one way or another, lots of upcoming pictures are getting to grips with the IMAX format, something which promises to make proceedings bigger and better (and more expensive for you). The next big film to latch onto IMAX is the sequel to the actually excellent The Hunger Games, currently titled The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which will harness the technological during its arena fighting sequences.

Now that we can’t possibly bear to watch movies that haven’t been manipulated in one way or another, lots of upcoming pictures are getting to grips with the IMAX format, something which promises to make proceedings bigger and better (and more expensive for you). The next big film to latch onto IMAX is the sequel to the actually excellent The Hunger Games, currently titled The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which will harness the technology for its arena fighting sequences.

Josh Hutcherson, who played Peeta in the first flick, has spoken out on such matters, confirming which parts of the movie will get nicely IMAX-ed:

“They’re shooting, I think, all the stuff in the arena is going to be IMAX [in ‘Catching Fire’]. So when you go see it in IMAX, you’ll see the regular movie when we’re in the Districts and in the Capitol. When you see us go up in the pod in the games, it will open up into IMAX. It will be amazing. It’s very cool.”

Hutcherson also revealed some information about the new battle arena:

“They actually built a cornucopia in Atlanta that we shot at, and it looks amazing, and the way that the spokes got out, and the way everyone comes up on the pedestals and the water — it looks incredible,” he gushed. “I’ve seen some of the CG renderings that [director] Francis [Lawrence] has worked on, and they look really, really great.”

For anybody who hasn’t seen the first movie or read the original novel, The Hunger Games takes place in a futuristic America called “Panem” in which society has been separated into various ugly districts. All the poor people slave away in these districts, doing things like mining and building, whilst the rich live a life of campy costumes and bad hair in the Capital. Every year, something called The Hunger Games takes place, in which two children from each district must battle to the death for entertainment purposes.

All in all, it’s like a blend of Battle Royale and the French Revolution, which is a quote I’m hoping will find its way onto a poster or something very soon.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens November 22nd, 2013 and stars Jennifer Lawrence.
