17 days and counting. That’s how close we are to the opening of the first part of Peter Jackson’s epic adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. It’s felt like an incredibly long road to get to it, but in merely two and a half weeks, the fans will finally get to see one of the most anticipated movies of the last few years.

While we’ve seen just about everything possible in the way of marketing materials (posters, trailers, TV spots, images, etc.), today, at last, we have the first actual clip from the film. It only runs about 40 seconds, but is rather significant in that it is the scene where Bilbo (Martin Freeman) receives his sword Sting from Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen).

For those of you unfamiliar with Sting, it is Bilbo’s Elf Blade that glows blue when orcs or goblins are nearby, something that particularly comes in handy when he has to venture through the caves of the goblins under the Misty Mountains.

While it is indeed exciting to see the first clip from the film, some of you may find it more exciting still to find out that the premiere will be occurring in just a few hours in Wellington, New Zealand, meaning that we could very well be hearing just how good the film is as early as tomorrow morning.

There has already been quite a bit of Oscar talk surrounding the film with many thinking a Best Picture nomination is in its future. It wouldn’t be all that surprising given that all three of Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films received one, with The Return of the King actually winning the big prize (along with ten other Oscars). We’ll just have to wait and see how it all plays out.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey finally arrives in theaters on December 14th.

Check out the clip below and let us know what you think in the comments.
