Pan’s Labyrinth Is Heading To Broadway

Now that Pan's Labyrinth has been a film for long enough, thank-you very much, it's time for the Guillermo del Toro's Oscar-winning Spanish Civil War fantasy to take its chances within the confines of another medium - and thankfully it's not going to be a rap album, but a fully-fledged Broadway musical. And they said all that violence wouldn't work on stage!

Now that Pan’s Labyrinth has been a film for long enough, thank-you very much, it’s time for Guillermo del Toro‘s Oscar-winning Spanish Civil War fantasy to take its chances within the confines of another medium – and thankfully it’s not going to be a rap album (that would be stupid), but a fully-fledged Broadway musical. And they said all that violence wouldn’t work on stage!

Del Toro has already co-written the book for the musical, apparently, and has hired Babel composer Gustavo Santaolalla to write the music, with lyrics set to be penned by Paul Williams. “I admire and love Gustavo and Paul wrote the perfect album in Phantom Of The Paradise, which I have loved for decades,” said del Toro on his collaborators. For those unaware, the story concerns a small girl who, in 1944 Fascist Spain, escapes into a fantasy world made up of both adorable and terrifying creatures rendered in both CGI and with puppets.

Pan’s Labyrinth, of course, isn’t particularly primed for its easy musical adaptability, although for a man who has recently helmed a project about giant robots battling it out in Japan and other countries where things like that might happen, this should be a breeze.
