Michael Bay is taking a break from his Transformers films to finally make a movie that doesn’t have decepticons in it (as far as we know). The result is Pain & Gain, and today we have the first trailer for the film.

The trailer spends a lot of the time in the gym, showing a ripped Mark Wahlberg, a gigantic Dwayne Johnson, and an Anthony Mackie who looks like he could’ve used a couple more weight sessions to fit in with his buddies. The rest of the trailer shows bikini-clad bodies, bodies of women in strip clubs, and oh yeah, more jacked bodies.

The film is based on a true story, so that lends credibility to the characters that otherwise wouldn’t be likely candidates for an extortion film that doesn’t star Will Ferrell. Then again, there has to be a note of humor to this one, considering the bodybuilders other than Wahlberg seem as dim as can be, and one of them is wearing a green-man suit while kidnapping.

This film seems more like something Wahlberg would’ve made during his Funky Bunch days rather than now as a serious actor, especially at the beginning of the trailer when he tells himself he’s “hot” and “big”. That being said, Wahlberg usually chooses his films well, so I’ll give this one the benefit of the doubt for now. Anything Wahlberg takes on these days has my attention, so it’ll be interesting to see what else is released for this film in the coming months.

The rest of the cast includes Rebel Wilson, Anthony Mackie, Ed Harris, Rob Corddry, and Tony Shalhoub.

Based on a true story, “Pain & Gain” follows a group of bodybuilders who engaged in a campaign of kidnapping, extortion and murder in Florida. First told in an article from the “Miami New Times.”
