With only a few months to go until the release of Evil Dead, a remake of the 1980s horror classic, the discussion about the film and anticipation for it is starting to drastically amp up.

A few days ago an incredibly bloody red band trailer for the film was released. So bloody in fact that my first thought was how there’s no way the actors were actually doused in all that gunk. Well, according to director Fede Alvarez, it’s all real, as no CGI was used for the film.

Check out the comments from Alvarez below.

“We didn’t do any CGI in the movie. There’s no CGI in the movie. Everything you will see is real, which was really demanding. This was a very long shoot, 70 days of shooting at night. There’s a reason people use CGI it’s cheaper and faster, I hate that. We researched a lot of magic tricks and illusion tricks. [Like] how you would make someone’s arm disappear.

There’s a moment where a girl goes through her arm with a kitchen knife — spoiler alert. And we knew since day one the camera would start wide, she goes for the knife, you see her arm, she starts going for it. And you think they’re going to cut away at any moment, but we don’t. She just goes for it and screams and the arm breaks and falls. So we really pushed the boundaries there, trying to create those illusions… It has a particularly bloody ending. The last scene is just…I want it to be the bloodiest scene, ever. And I think it is.”

I’m a big fan of finding ways to use traditional effects to create something awesome on screen, and in a horror film like this it’s all the more impressive. What this means is from the iconic tree-rape scene to cutting a tongue in half, what we see is basically what was shot. And the bloodiest scene ever? That’s enough to have horror fans everywhere giddy with excitement.

From the looks of it, even those who weren’t fans of the original series should definitely find something to enjoy in Alvarez’s remake. This will certainly be one of the top horror films of 2013. Seriously, if you haven’t seen the newest trailer yet, hop on over and see it. It’s awesome.

Evil Dead hits theaters April 12th 2013, and stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci, and Elizabeth Blackmore.

What do you think of Alvarez opting to make Evil Dead without any CGI? Does this make you more excited for the bloodbath to come? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
