Well, no one will ever accuse Guillermo del Toro of slacking. Yesterday we learned all about how he was approached to direct Star Wars: Episode VII and is going to try again on his At The Mountains Of Madness adaptation. Today, del Toro confirmed that he’s working on an adaptation of DC Comics’ Dark Universe (once called Heaven Sent).
Talking with IGN (via The Playlist), del Toro had this to say:
“I’m working on it. I’m writing the outline and we’re already in talks with a writer. A very, very good writer. People are probably going to be happy with who we have chosen. He accepted. I’ve been courting this writer, who I think is the perfect guy for this job. We’re doing it … The movement for this happened before [The Avengers]. They [Warner Brothers] were already galvanized to launch ‘Justice League’ and they were galvanized to make their universe cohesive. They are really, really, with [Man Of Steel], very, very confident with what they have. They are now feeling they have two pillars. Batman and Superman … There’s a foundation that now they can build on.”
This whole thing comes as no surprise as the rumor has been floating around for awhile. Given del Toro’s love of the darker/weirder side of comic books, there was every chance he’d eventually get the film made.
We must remember, however, that this is Guillermo del Toro we’re talking about; the man who has not stopped working in … ever. With Pacific Rim on the way, del Toro’s next project is work on the TV series of his own book The Strain, then the haunted house movie Crimson Peak. Then there’s his new attempt at At The Mountains Of Madness, The Hulk TV series … the list is likely to go on. So while del Toro has secured a writer and an outline for Dark Universe, who knows when it will actually see the light of day.
I’m not a huge comic book fan, but I am a fan of Guillermo del Toro. He brought us Hellboy, after all, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt on a dark adaptation of a pretty weird comic book world. Although I do want to see At The Mountains Of Madness first, I’ll take whatever del Toro feels he wants to give us in the next five years.
