AMC has officially announced that the previously cancelled FOX TV studio drama, The Killing, would be returning to the network for its third season.

The young show has had quite an exciting run behind the scenes. Orginally airing to some pretty big ratings, it didn’t seem like it would make it past its season two slump. Fans couldn’t quite get behind the season one cliffhanger that left them still wondering who killed Rosie Larsen, an answer those who stuck around finally got when season two wrapped up. With declining numbers, the show was eventually cancelled last summer.

It didn’t take long before rumors began to circulate that the show would be revived for a possible third season and now it’s official. The Killing will return home to AMC for a 12-episode season. Stars Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman are set to return for the new season, however, several familar faces will not be around when the show picks up a year later. THR is reporting that Billy Campbell and Michelle Forbes are among the actors that are not returning and production for season 3 of The Killing will begin Febuary 25th in Vancouver.

The logline for the upcoming season is:

A year after closing the Rosie Larsen case, Sarah Linden (Enos) is no longer a detective. But when her ex-partner Stephen Holder’s (Kinnaman) search for a runaway girl leads him to discover a gruesome string of murders that connects to a previous murder investigation by Linden, she is drawn back into the life she thought she’d left behind.

It’s still unclear whether Netflix will play a part in the show as it moves forward with production but it’s pretty spectacular that the show is getting a second chance. Most shows aren’t that lucky. Lately though, it seems that bringing shows back from oblivion is at least a slight possibility with the ressurection of Arrested Development giving cancelled shows an bit of hope. Even so, it’s still rare enough for fans of The Killing to be counting their blessings.
