So, it looks like Paul Thomas Anderson and Joaquin Phoenix had such a good time making The Master that they want to team up again. This time, instead of exploring religion and faith, the two will make Inherent Vice, which will certainly be a bit of a “different” project for the director.
Though it was set to star Robert Downey Jr. as a P.I. pothead named Doc Sportello, it seems that the mega movie star has dropped out, presumably to do more work for Marvel, and Phoenix has replaced him.
For those unfamiliar with the project, it is based on the Thomas Pynchon novel of the same name, which is set in ’60s Los Angeles and revolves around the aforementioned Sportello who finds himself mixed up in a strange case that includes all sorts of colourful characters. It’s been in development for a long time and Downey Jr. has been linked to the lead role since 2010.
Today though, Variety is telling us that the actor has moved on and the role has gone to Phoenix. As for Charlize Theron, who earlier this month was reported to be circling the film, the report doesn’t specifically say anything about her so at this point, we can only assume that she’s still interested. As always though, we’ll keep you updated when we hear something official.
As for Phoenix replacing Downey Jr., well, I’m not too pleased. I mean, Phoenix is a great actor and all and he did give a tremendous performance in The Master. He obviously has a good working relationship with Anderson and I’m sure the two will make an excellent film. That being said though, I still would have loved to of seen Downey Jr. in the role. It seemed like a perfect match for him and I was really excited about it.
