“I’m not crazy, I’m just passionate.”

The title of last night’s episode of The Vampire Diaries, Catch Me If You Can, pretty much sums it up. The entire episode was an elaborate game of cat and mouse with characters rotating in and out of the power player role.

In case you missed last week’s episode, this week was pretty much a rehash of it. The race for the cure is now a team sport. We have some unlikely and surely uneasy partnerships springing up. Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) are on Team Hunter with Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) with some support from Elena (Nina Dobrev). They are banking on Jeremy killing enough vampires to complete his ‘hunters’ mark’ and provide them with a map. They also have the added benefit of already having the sword that is supposedly the key to reading it.

Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Professor Shane (David Alpay) are on Team Shane which is heading into a rough spot. Shane did coach Bonnie on harnessing magic from alternative sources, but he failed to mention that he has a thing for orchestrating cult like murder in sets of 12. Secrets always have a tendency to bite you at some point – sometimes literally, you never know in Mystic Falls – and Shane’s might take him out of the game before he reaches the finish line. Besides having a witch on his side that is now proficient in dark magic, he also had the mysterious Silas’ headstone. Had being the operative word. Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Rebekah (Claire Holt) are on Team Rebekah, naturally. They have a very lopsided history that seems like it might complicate things, but they are very aware of eachother’s flaws and personal agendas which makes everything more clear cut.

And, the newest competitor batting against all the odds is Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic) on Team Keep-Silas-Where-He-Is. Up until now the only time we’ve seen Kol is when he was carrying out his siblings agendas. Now that’s he’s back in town he is on his own solo mission despite its unpopularity. He may have originally come back to Mystic Falls at the beckon of his sister to help her convince outside parties to cooperate, but now that he knows the stakes everything has changed. His reaction to the news of Silas reminds me a lot of how Klaus reacted when he heard that Michael had been released. It’s not often that we get a glimpse at an Original actually fearing someone, so this Silas character must be a dangerous fellow. That guess comes with a big, duh. Kol is adamant that they should all drop this quest and leave well enough alone. Unfortunately, no one else is ready to jump on this bandwagon, shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that he’s now on everyone’s hit list.

As nice as it is to finally have a rational Original, i.e. this Silas guy is bad news, let’s not go looking for trouble, I’d rather Kol pick a side and stay alive. I’m not sure if standing up for the logical cause would make him a martyr considering 1. he’s a vampire and 2. He kills people, but it wouldn’t be the worse way to go. Yet, I can’t help but want him to stick around and not become a stepping stone in the obstacle course that finding the cure is becoming. Especially considering that at least 2 of the Originals are heading to New Orleans soon. I think there’s definitely more to him than we’ve seen and if he becomes hunter food it will cut off a really good potential plot line.

On the other hand, one Original in the dust is like 10,000+ hunter kills. I don’t know how much longer Jeremy can go on like this. He seems particularly fragile lately, which considering all he’s been through is more than understandable, except that he couldn’t have picked a worse time to let it all get to him. I guess trying to kill the only family you have left, even if she is a vampire, will do that to you. At least he hasn’t tried to kill Elena in a couple of episodes, so that’s a step in the right direction.
