John Green fans gather around, our beloved The Fault in Our Stars is going to be adapted for the big screen by Josh Boone. And who is he you may ask? Well, Boone is the director who helmed the comedy-drama Stuck in Love, which was originally known as Writers.

For people who haven’t read the book, The Fault in Our Stars is a best-selling novel which focuses on the relationship between two teenagers who meet at a cancer support group. Hazel Lancaster is a sixteen year old girl that’s battling thyroid cancer when she meets the charming Augustus Waters, a boy who’s lost his leg to the disease. The two of them fall in love and bond together over their outlook on life and death. And yes, it is as depressing as it sounds but it’s also delightfully charming and insightful.

Sticking to a lighter note, Fox 2000 has acquired the rights to The Fault in Our Stars and the script will be adapted by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. The pair worked on 500 Days of Summer, so the script is in good hands. Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, known for The Twilight Saga, are the film’s producers.

Shailene Woodley who starred in The Descendants, which scored her a Golden Globe nomination, was said to be portraying the female protagonist, Hazel, but she hasn’t been officially offered the role.

The Fault in Our Stars will be the second movie in which Boone takes the reins. I’m not familiar with the director but he seems passionate about the project and that’s a good thing. Check out what he says about adapting the young adult book:

“John’s book came along just when I needed it,” Boone tells THR in a statement. “It pierced my heart and helped me deal with my grief. I laughed and cried and was left with an overwhelming feeling of hope. That our lives matter, that the love and kindness we share with others reverberates long after we’re gone.
I feel the weight and responsibility to get this right and give his readers and devoted fans as pure a translation as possible …We hope to create a little infinity within this film that fans can revisit over and over.”

With his enthusiasm for the novel, I think his adaptation may do the book justice.

The Fault in Our Stars will begin production this summer. But what do you think about seeing a screen adaptation of the book? Have you read the book? Who do you think should play Hazel? Or would you be content if Shailene Woodley is cast?
