Insomniac Files For Sunset Overdrive Trademark

NeoGAF user, and apparent trademark super-sleuth, "Kifimbo" has discovered a new trademark filing by Insomniac Games (the developers behind the Resistance and Ratchet & Clank series) for the name Sunset Overdrive. The paperwork associated with the trademark reveals that Insomniac filed for the mark earlier this month, and that they intend to use it for something related to "Computer game software" or and "Entertainment service", like "providing an on-line computer game".

NeoGAF user, and apparent trademark super-sleuth, “Kifimbo” has discovered a new trademark filing by Insomniac Games (the developers behind the Resistance and Ratchet & Clank series) for the name Sunset Overdrive. The paperwork associated with the trademark reveals that Insomniac filed for the mark earlier this month, and that they intend to use it for something related to “Computer game software” or and “Entertainment service”, like “providing an on-line computer game”.

Further connecting Sunset Overdrive to Insomnia Games (as if their name on the trademark wasn’t enough) is the domain sunsetoverdrive, which was recently registered by Ryan Schneider. Coincidentally, Insomniac’s brand development director is also named Ryan Schneider, and we are guessing that the two have a lot more in common than just the same initials.

Currently we know that Insomniac Games is wrapping up development on the third person co-op shooter Fuse, which is scheduled to be released sometime between April 1st and July 31, 2013. This trademark seems to suggest that they already have their next project underway.

So, what exactly is Sunset Overdrive? Well, we don’t know for sure, but the name implies some sort of racing game where you are constantly being blinded by the setting sun.

Whatever the game turns out to be, it is also important to note that Insomniac Games’ Sunset Overdrive trademark is not limited to any “particular font, style, size, or color”. This means that you might as well just forget all about your evil plans to run out and quickly trademark-squat on its exact logo.

With E3 bearing down on us, it seems likely that we will soon find out exactly what Sunset Overdrive is, and what platforms it is being developed fo. Give us your best speculation on that front in the comments below, and we will keep an eye out for any official announcement from Insomniac Games.
