With Tomb Raider due out next week Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have released the latest trailer for the franchise reboot, which paints Lara Croft’s incredible tale of survival as a universal story that is shared between everyone who plays it. As the trailer points out, “there is a survivor in all of us”.

Not to throw too much cold water on the Tomb Raider‘s marketing efforts, but I feel pretty confident in saying that I doubt I could have actually survived a single thing that is shown in the trailer, including the initial shipwreck that leaves Lara stranded on the island. Hell, I’m pretty sure that I couldn’t have even started that campfire without access to a box of matches, a bottle of lighter fluid, and a package of pre-cut wood. Even then, there would be a strong chance that I would have just set myself on fire.

At any rate, I’ve been a big fan of everything Crystal Dynamics has down with the franchise since they took it over (except for the glitch-filled Tomb Raider: Underworld), and I’ve especially appreciated all the effort they have put into transforming and expanding the character of Lara Croft.

I’m extremely excited to get my hands on Tomb Raider next week. The huge Uncharted-like set pieces that have been repeatedly shown off don’t really interest me that much, but I’m all for the game’s little talked about exploration aspects and gear upgrade system.

Our full review of Tomb Raider is coming up soon, in the meantime you can read our thoughts on a the game from the recent Microsoft X-Series preview event, and take a look at an unboxing video/review for the game’s limited edition Xbox 360 controller.
