Who would’ve thought that anyone could play a wizard, a man with magic horns, Allen Ginsberg, and the most famous hunchback assistant, all before age 25? Well that’s what Daniel Radcliffe is trying to do, as he’s in final negotiations for the role of Igor in Frankenstein.

This version of the classic tale is being directed by Paul McGuigan and scripted by Chronicle‘s Max Landis. It’s still unknown how faithfully Landis is sticking to the original Mary Shelley story or any portrayals that we’ve already seen, but I think it’s safe to assume that whatever Landis comes up with, it’s going to be worth watching.

Frankenstein is one of the most iconic monster stories ever for a reason – when done well, it’s terrifying. Think about how many times the story of a scientist creating a living being that can’t be controlled has been told. The biggest question Landis will have to tackle is whether to portray the monster as a purely evil beast, or as a victim for the audience to sympathize with. Many films have portrayed him as more of a tragic hero, but I’d kind of like to see a dark horror story where he’s a mindless killing machine.

Many versions of the story are told from Igor’s perspective, and this one will be no different, meaning Radcliffe would be the star of the film. Early descriptions of Landis’ version of the character have called him pathologically dirty and dressed in clown’s clothing. Sounds wonderfully creepy to me.

Radcliffe really is an extremely talented actor, and lately he’s been honing his skills in the theater as frequently as on the big screen. In fact, he’ll be finishing his run in the West End play Cripple of Inishmaan just before Frankenstein begins filming. I can’t wait to see what he can do in such a dark and twisted role.
