After much speculation and contradicting news reports, we finally have confirmation from CBS President Les Moonves that Dexter will indeed come to an end after season eight. Now, Showtime president David Nevins has said in the past that the show will continue for nine seasons but both Moonves and the producers of Dexter have insisted that season eight is the last.

For the past year or so there has been a back and forth between Nevins and the show’s producers about when it would end, but now with Moonves’ confirmation, I think it’s safe to say that we’ll see our favorite serial killer laid to rest in season eight.

That being said, Moonves’ comment, which was made during the 2013 dbAccess Media, Internet & Telecom conference, was more of an offhand remark (he referred to the upcoming season as the show’s last) rather than official confirmation. But seeing as Showtime is a subsidiary of CBS, I’d say that Moonves knows what he’s talking about.

Set to begin on June 30th, if season eight really is the last time we’ll be seeing the Dark Passenger on television, I can’t say that I’ll be too upset. Since probably season five, the show has gone downhill tremendously. In fact, I lost interest a couple seasons ago and haven’t been keeping up in recent years. At one point, Dexter was one of the best shows on television. Now, it’s far from it.

Although Michael C. Hall is still able to give a powerful performance as the titular serial killer, the show itself has turned into a bit of a joke. Everyone I know that watches it still is a bit fed up at this point. Perhaps it’s a good thing that the curtain will finally be closed on television’s most likeable killer.

What do you think of this news? Happy to finally see Dexter wrap up? Or do you want another season? Let us know in the comments below.
