It seems that 2014 will be a good year for Christopher Nolan fans. First we have Transcendence, which is being directed by longtime collaborator and acclaimed cinematographer Wally Pfister and produced by Nolan and his wife. That film is set for April of 2014. Today, we’re receiving more news that should put a smile on the face of Nolan fans everywhere. And that is that the director’s upcoming sci-fi film, Interstellar, will touch down in November 2014.
Details on the film, which is being co-produced by Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros., are scarce and aside from the fact that it will hit both regular and IMAX theatres, we know almost nothing about it.
Brad Grey, Chairman and CEO of Paramount, had the following to say about Mr. Nolan in the press release:
“As a filmmaker and storyteller, Chris has continuously entertained the world with his extraordinary and unparalleled talents. I am pleased beyond measure to welcome him to the Paramount Pictures family. Partnering with Chris, Emma, Lynda and Warner Bros. to release this original idea next November is the perfect way to start the Thanksgiving and holiday movie season for audiences around the world.”
The screenplay is coming from Nolan and his brother Jonathan, no surprise there, but what they have cooked up for us is most definitely a surprise. Apparently, the story is based on scientific theories by an Caltech astrophysicist named Kip Thorne. It supposedly involves time travel, alternate realities and wormholes. The press release issued today does add that it will depict “a heroic interstellar voyage to the furthest reaches of our scientific understanding,” but again, that’s not really a lot to go on.
Nevertheless, Interstellar sounds extremely promising. Not only because it’s a Christopher Nolan film, but it sounds like it will be a complete mind-bender, much like Inception and Memento. I may be a bit premature in saying this, but already the film is one of my most anticipated for 2014.
