Kalypso Media has announced that Alien Spidy, a downloadable side-scrolling action platformer from developer Enigma Software, has been confirmed for an initial release on Wednesday, March 20, for Xbox Live Arcade, PC, and Mac, with a PlayStation Network version in the near future. The Xbox version will cost 800 Microsoft points, with the PC and Mac versions costing $9.99.

Alien Spidy follows the titular Spidy, an alien spider who crash-lands on Earth and must locate his friend Virgi, as well as numerous scattered parts of his wrecked spaceship. Players can expect to traverse through 69 unique levels across three different settings in a forest, a pond, and a cave, with over 350 hidden collectibles and achievements. Gameplay will be a physics-based mixture of side-scrolling action and puzzles, with numerous enemies and bosses to deal with along the way.

In a press release, Jonathan Hales, managing director at Kalypso Media, was quoted as saying, “Alien Spidy is a new take on the classic side-scroller, but with all sorts of modern twists. The game is filled with colorful characters, beautiful animations, and just the right balance of pick-up-and-play accessibility and ramps up the challenge in later levels, making it perfect for all types of gamers.”

Several new screenshots for the game have also been released, which can be viewed in the gallery below. These shots do a good job of showing off an appealing art style, with an interesting mixture of Limbo-esque silhouettes and brighter neon colors on certain objects. There definitely appears to be an emphasis on point collection as well.

Overall, Alien Spidy looks like it has the potential to be a quality 2D platformer, and as a fan of the genre, I’m looking forward to seeing how the final product turns out.
