Bae Doona Will Reteam With The Wachowskis For Jupiter Ascending

This article is over 12 years old and may contain outdated information

South Korean actress Bae Doona, who starred in Cloud Atlas, last year’s epic sci-fi tale from The Wachowskis, will reunite with the siblings again on their newest film, Jupiter Ascending. The actress joins an already impressive cast that includes Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Eddie Redmayne and Sean Bena.

The story is said to follow “Jupiter Jones (Kunis), who is destined for great things, but stuck cleaning toilets on an endless run of bad breaks. When Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down, Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along – her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.”

Though Bae Doona’s role isn’t specified just yet, we do know that it will be a small one, unlike her role in Cloud Atlas, which was quite large.

“My role in the movie is a very small one,” Doona said to High Cut magazine. “Compared to ‘Cloud Atlas,’ I think this new movie will a lot easier and just an enjoyable SF movie.”

Opening on July 25th, 2014, Jupiter Ascending is already one of my most anticipated films of next year. 2014 looks like it’s going to be a real treat for sci-fi fans too, with this film and several other high profile sci-fi flicks releasing. Among those are Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar and Wally Pfister’s Transcendence, two titles which will surely do great things for the genre.

I was pretty impressed with Cloud Atlas. It was an excellent film and restored my faith in the Wachowskis, who had lost a bit of respect from me after the dreadful Speed Racer. Oh ya, and they also killed what could have been an excellent trilogy with The Matrix.

Sure, the first film is groundbreaking and damn impressive, but the other two are messy, convoluted and nowhere near as good as the original. Like I said though, Cloud Atlas showed that they still have what it takes to pull off an epic sci-fi and I hope their new project is just as good.
