Seth MacFarlane Asked To Host The 86th Academy Awards

Despite lackluster reception, the Academy of Motion Arts and Sciences wants Seth MacFarlane back for a second gig. Several factors seem to have come into play on their decision : the ratings increased in comparison to the disastrous 84th Academy Awards, hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway and, more importantly, he was hilarious, which is more than I can say about previous hosts such as alleged funnymen Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.

Despite lackluster reception, the Academy of Motion Arts and Sciences wants Seth MacFarlane back for a second gig. Several factors seem to have come into play on their decision: the ratings increased in comparison to the disastrous 84th Academy Awards, hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway and, more importantly, he was hilarious, which is more than I can say about previous hosts such as alleged funnymen Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.

Don’t hold your breath, though. The creator of Family Guy shot down all rumors regarding his return for next year’s show back in February. When asked on Twitter about hosting next year’s ceremony, MacFarlane seemed skeptical. “No way. Lotta fun to have done it, though,” said the comedian.

So much for that. The comedian is definitely one of the busiest people in Hollywood right now. Not only is he prepping a new pilot with Giovanni Ribisi for a TV show called Dads, but he’s also working out the kinks for his next feature, A Million Ways to Die in the West, in which he will star alongside Amanda Seyfried, Sarah Silverman and Liam Neeson.

Besides, he’s certainly aware of the mixed (if slightly negative) reception his repertoire got, and he probably feels he won’t be so lucky next time. Despite his decent performance, critics have pointed out his bad taste when it came to touchy subjects such as the Lincoln assassination. Seriously, this is the man who created Family Guy, a show known for pushing the boundaries of what is considered politically correct. What did you expect?

Still, if this came to fruition, how awesome would it be? Can the producers be persuasive enough to talk Seth MacFarlane into providing laughter at the Oscars again? Or would the Academy be wise to give someone else a shot before Seth MacFarlane becomes the new Billy Crystal? Leave a comment below.
