Rumours surrounding the upcoming adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey are nothing new, but this one is pretty interesting. The Wrap is reporting that director Gus Van Sant has shot a test scene for the film with Magic Mike‘s Alex Pettyfer in the lead role, that of Christian Grey. Now, the scene was shot without Universal’s approval but apparently, Van Sant is chasing the gig.

The scene that was shot, for those wondering, is when Anastasia Steele loses her virginity to Grey. No word on which actress played Steele though.

As of now, neither Pettyfer or Van Sant are formally attached to the film but the studio does want to have the movie in theatres next Summer, so we could hear more on Van Sant and Pettyfer’s involvement in the near future. From what we understand though, both individuals are on the studio’s list for potential candidates.

While it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Pettyfer in something like this, Van Sant signing on would be an interesting turn. As great a director as he is though, I’m not sure if even he could elevate the source material here to turn it into something classy and not just complete trash. Then again, who knows what he’ll do with it if he gets the job. Van Sant has done some interesting things in the past and it could be a smart move to have him direct.

As for Pettyfer, well, he’s the perfect actor for this kind of film and it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to see him in the role. Plus, he’s currently working with Universal on Endless Love, so it’s possible that they’re pleased with his work on that film and want to bring him on board for this adaptation.
