Girl Most Likely Trailer Proves Kristen Wiig Is Still Really Funny

Former SNL genius Kristen Wiig made our pants turn yellow with the brilliant Bridesmaids back in 2011. Since then she's dabbled in a spot of serious drama in Friends With Kids, appeared in an episode of Portlandia and said goodbye to her career on Saturday Night Live. While she's completed a ton of work in the last year, most of which are in post-production it feels like it's been far too long since she's been on the big screen. Fear not, the first trailer for her latest, Girl Most Likely (previously titled Imogene) has arrived! And it's dead funny.

Former SNL genius Kristen Wiig made our pants turn yellow with the brilliant Bridesmaids back in 2011. Since then she’s dabbled in a spot of serious drama in Friends With Kids, appeared in an episode of Portlandia and said goodbye to her career on Saturday Night Live. While she’s completed a ton of work in the last year, most of which are in post-production, it feels like it’s been far too long since she’s been on the big screen. Fear not, the first trailer for her latest, Girl Most Likely (previously titled Imogene) has arrived! And it’s dead funny.

Shifting away from the allure of studio flicks, Wiig’s choice to go the indie route appears to have paid off. From directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, Girl Most Likely follows Imogene, a New York playwright who tries to fake a suicide attempt to get the attention of her ex-boyfriend. Unfortunately for Imogene, she winds up in the custody of her mother – a bonkers gambler with a massive love for the soup.

Building on the type of gags you’d expect from a Wiig film – the trailer explodes as soon as Annette Bening arrives on screen. Since 1996’s Mars Attacks, Bening’s gift for exploiting comedy via facial expressions and deadpan delivery have been honed right through to 1999’s American Beauty and beyond. She and Wiig spar off each other effortlessly as mother and daughter, while Matt Dillon’s shifty CIA operative shares a passing similarity to his role in There’s Something About Mary. From the looks of this trailer, the film will hopefully be a huge success and wake the studios up to the fact that women need funnier roles!

Girl Most Likely opens on a limited number of screens in the U.S. on July 19th, and in the U.K. on July 26th.
