After hearing that Joe Wright was the man wanted for the director’s chair for the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey adaptation, now we’re receiving news that he isn’t being considered anymore due to scheduling conflicts. No word yet on who the studio is looking at to replace him but we do know that other candidates that have been tossed around include Bennett Miller, Patty Jenkins and Gus Van Sant, who shot a test scene not too long ago.
Whoever does step into the director’s chair on this one will certainly have their work cut out for them. The book (if you can even call it that) has a rather large fanbase and a lot of people are betting very big on this project. Personally, I think that the success of a film such as this will hinge more on its lead actors moreso than on the person behind the camera, just given the nature of the material and whatnot. So if they can secure two capable leads, who are approved in the public’s eye, then I think things will turn out alright, financially at least. Which is all anyone really cares about for a film like this, right?
Kelly Marcel (Terra Nova, Saving Mr. Banks) is on scripting duty and for now, it seems that Universal and Focus Features will continue their search.
