There were probably legions of Shia LeBeouf fans crying into their Lucky Charms after learning that we won’t see him getting his end away in Lars Von Trier’s Nymphomaniac. Then there’s the rest of us, who breathed a sigh of relief.
With this latest splash of news, it sounds like technology has bridged the gap between real and unreal. In essence: it’ll pretty much look like LeBeouf is boinking.
Von Trier has assembled for his two-part sex fest an undeniably attractive cast. The idea of those actors all going at it like rabbits is a contributing factor in the film’s appeal. Now, it seems for the hardcore scenes featuring actual body doubles having sex, it’ll appear that you are in fact, watching the actors.
At Cannes this week, Nymphomaniac producer Louise Vesth let the cock cat out of the bag when she told THR:
“We shot the actors pretending to have sex and then had the body doubles, who really did have sex, and in post we will digital-impose the two. So above the waist it will be the star and the below the waist it will be the doubles.”
The extensive post-production work responsible for Von Trier’s absence at Cannes is no doubt a result of this technique. Imagine poring over an editing suite making sure Uma Thurman’s bum matches her stunt doubles norks. What a terrible job.
Vesth also revealed that Von Trier has introduced experimental graphics into the post-production. This will include double exposures, and imposing words and symbols atop the action. Sounds like watching a foreign porno. Brilliant.
Zentropa, the folks behind the film’s marketing have crafted a slow burning campaign to scintillate fans for the flick’s release. So far, we’ve had a suggestive GIF which purports itself to be a lady’s intimates, and a cast tableau rammed full of phallic imagery and innuendo.
Nymphomaniac will debut in Denmark on December 25th.
