Things are heating up for Guillermo Del Toro’s monster epic Pacific Rim. With a release date imminent, the marketing machine has been set to high, sputtering out new images, posters, banners and TV spots. Surfacing with an interview Del Toro did for Empire, a couple of new images showcase the sheer scale of the film’s monsters.

From what we know of the film, an influx of monsters who’ve heaved themselves out of a deep sea crevasse start to wreak havoc on Earth. The trailers and TV spots so far have demonstrated the film’s summer blockbuster story stylings; an alien enemy battles against man. The colossal monsters, called Kaiju, are pretty terrifying and these new photos would have any sane person running for the hills. Some hills far away from the sea. In the far corner of the first pic, you can see a couple of humans about to soil themselves.

The second further displays the Kaijus enormity, as one of the killers of the deep battles with a Jaeger. No, not a huge bottle of the 70% proof stuff that gives you gut rot (although there’s an idea to fend them off). No, the Jaegers are humanity’s response to the war. Giant robots which are controlled remotely by two human pilots are the Kaijus biggest threat. They’re both pretty huge, so have a look for yourself below.

Here’s the official synopsis for the flick:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Pacific Rim opens on July 12th.
